Prime Minister's National Relief Fund(PMNRF)
In the aftermath of the cyclone Aila of 2009 that ravaged the coastal West Bengal
including Sundarban area. It was felt the number of deaths were more in the affected
areas due to non-availability of safe shelter buildings in the coastal villages.
The Government of Central and State correctly decided to undertake construction
of multipurpose cyclone shelters in high risk areas of three costal districts of
West Bengal. The detail of these projects was furnished subsequently.
Prime Minister's National Relief Fund, (PMNRF): 50 Multipurpose Cyclone Shelter
(MPCS) will be constructed under National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
These shelters will be constructed in 3 Districts and the numbers of shelter to
be constructed district wise given in the matrix. Two Central Governments under
takings were assigned the works. Pll (Engineering Project India limited) would construct
35 in North 24 Parganas &East Medinipur Districts) and HSCl (Hindusthan Steel Works
Construction limited 15 for only in South 24 Parganas District.

Total cost for 50 centers is in tune of Rs 138.65 crores. The Cost for 15 centers
under HSCl is Rs 48.09 crores and the cost for 35 centres under EPll is 90.56 crores.
Till date HSCl has completed 12 centers and handed over to DM, South 24 Parganas
and the remaining 3 centers will be hand over within few months. The shelter in
Atpukur (Minakhan Block) in North 24 Parganas is ready for hand over District Magistrate.
A meeting held on 28.11.2013 in the chamber of Principal Secretary Disaster Management
Department with representative from HSCl & EPIl. In this meeting EPll assured that
they will complete maximum number of sites within March 2014.
